The Magic of Self-Hypnosis
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, focusing on relaxing the body and opening oneself up to the power of suggestion. A therapist will ask a client to focus his/her attention on what is being said and to relax, allowing the imagination to visualize images and to feel certain sensations. In this way, the therapist gains access to the subconscious mind to make desired changes. The client remains in control at all times and is aware of his/her surroundings. However, in this relaxed state, people claim their perception of pain has changed, that they have better problem solving skills and gain stronger insights into their lives.
Self-hypnosis is something anyone can learn. It's not difficult to familiarize yourself with the relaxation process, which involves tensing and relaxing the major muscle groups as you move up your body. Starting with the feet, calves, thighs, pelvis, stomach, shoulders, arms, hands, neck, face and head, in about 10 minutes, you can reduce tension, anxiety, fears and some psychosomatic symptoms, just by managing your thoughts. After a while, the process becomes automatic and you will be able to reduce your stress, on demand.
When you are completely relaxed, you can start adding positive suggestions, like "I am eating less and becoming healthier and healthier every day" or "I am calm and relaxed; I am successful and positive." These statements are always to be made in the present tense and must be positive. Never say, "I don't want to be fat." The subconscious mind doesn't understand negatives and will draw an image of just what you didn't intend. It is better to say, "I am feeling thin and slender" and allow the mind to conjure up those pictures.
Self-hypnosis is a valuable method to help you de-stress, feel less pain and be receptive to alternative ways of thinking. It allows you to change patterns of behavior that may have caused difficulty before. It enables you to learn new skills and explore new perceptions. Self hypnosis is safe and can be as effective as guided hypnosis. In fact, many people are amazed at how much they can accomplish using this alternative and effective tool.
